The Highfield School 'immensely proud' of 2022 GCSE cohort

Teachers and staff at the Highfield School in Letchworth have wished their students well for their futures after achieving "excellent" results.

Lucy Miles, headteacher, said: "We have again seen a strong set of results for our pupils here at Highfield.

"Our Year 11s have, under challenging circumstances, worked so hard to achieve their results and we are immensely proud of each and every one of them.

"Their sheer determination and drive, along with the support of their teachers and families, has meant many have excelled across a number of subjects.

"We now look forward welcoming many back to our sixth form in September and wish all of our students the best with the next stage of their education."

The school named students who have achieved exceptionally high results.

These are:

  • Daniel Duncan - eight grade 9s and two grade 8s
  • Madeline Harman - eight grade 9s and two grade 8s
  • Katie Jenkins - eight grades 9s and two grade 8s
  • Katie Gonsalves - three grade 9s, two grade 8s and two grade 7s

Samuel Whitbread School, Clifton celebrates ‘fantastic’ GCSE results

Year 11 students at Samuel Whitbread Academy in Clifton, near Shefford, are celebrating “fantastic” GCSE and BTEC results.

School principal Nick Martin said: “This has been an absolutely fantastic year group and it has been a pleasure to be their headteacher since they joined us in Year 9.

“They have overcome every challenge that the last two years have thrown at them and acted as great role models for the younger students.

“They have shown enormous character during the pandemic and have certainly embodied our school values of determination and resilience.

“Although Covid curtailed our plans for their final day celebrations, I was so pleased that it didn’t dampen the festivities at the Year 11 prom, which was a fitting endto their year.

“I wish them luck on the next step of their journey, whether with us in our sixth form, at college or in an apprenticeship.”

The school named several students with exceptionally high grades.

These include Breanna, who secured nine 9s, one grade 7 and an A in the free-standing mathematics qualification.

Isabelle achieved eight grade 9s, two 8s and a B in FSMQ maths.

Natasha secured seven grade 9s, three grade 8s and A in FSMQ maths, and Jess gained seven grade 9s, an 8 and a 7.

Additionally, Amy secured six grade 9s and four grade 8s, Emily five grade 9s and five grade 8s, Lucia six grade 9s, two 8s and a 7, Sami two grade 9s and six grade 8s and Lydia three grade 9s, five grade 8s and an A in FSMQ maths.

Dr Alan Lee, CEO of the academy group BEST, said: “I am so pleased for all in the Samuel Whitbread community.

“Throughout their GCSE studies our students have, time and again, shown terrific character meeting all challenges head-on.

“Staff and parents have been there every step of the way.

“Together, exceptional results have been achieved.

'Exceptional range of results' for North Hertfordshire College students

Students at North Hertfordshire College (NHC) have been celebrating another year of strong GCSE results. 

Many of those who sat their GCSEs this year have studied maths and English alongside their chosen vocational and professional courses, helping them gain the skills they need for a successful career or to progress onto an Apprenticeship or higher education.

NHC’s Principal Kit Davies said: “This year, we have seen another exceptional range of results and I cannot be prouder of our students. 

"The results our students have achieved are representative of the incredible dedication and hard work they have shown, and it is thanks to their hard work and that of our talented tutors, that so many have achieved the grades they need to progress onto their chosen next steps. We are delighted with our student success this year.”

Many of the students who received their results today now have the foundation they need to progress in their career journey, either through further study, starting an apprenticeship, entering university, or starting a rewarding career.

Among those receiving their GCSE results was Stacey Richards, who now has the grades and confidence she needs for her next career step. She said: “When I first started studying GCSE English at NHC, I wanted to go into nursing or teaching. Now that I’ve got the qualification I need, I’ve decided to pursue a career in teaching.

"Studying GCSE English has given me the confidence to learn and achieve, as the learning was very accessible.”

Kayleigh McKivett, who also studied GCSE English part-time, said: “My English GCSE has given me a new confidence in my writing skills. I didn’t think I could do this before, but the support from my teachers has helped me to believe in myself. The environment at NHC has really allowed me to learn and thrive.”

Daniella Robbins, who studied for her GCSEs alongside her Access to Higher Education course in Nursing & Midwifery, is taking her new grades with her to university. She said: “I’ve got a place at the University of Bedfordshire to study Adult Nursing, which I’ll be starting in a few weeks. I could not have done it without NHC, and I’m grateful for the support I’ve received during my studies.”

Sandra Shirley completed her English GCSE alongside her Level 2 Team Leading qualification. She said: “This was an amazing experience. My next step is to go on to further education and keep learning, I want to study English at A-level and get a degree. I couldn’t have done this without the support of my teachers; I’m really proud of myself.”

Lewie Stewart O’Donnell is also happy with his GCSE English grade. He said: “I’m very happy to pass, I now feel more accomplished in myself. I’m going to keep going and keep learning, and then I’m going to apply to university. This is helping me feel more fulfilled in myself.”

The college is now open for enrolment onto courses starting in September and looks forward to welcoming a number of students who have received their GCSE results today.

Etonbury Academy 'extremely proud'

Year 11 students at Etonbury Academy are celebrating today  after GCSE and BTEC results were released.

The Arlesey school, which is part of the Bedfordshire Schools Trust (BEST), is extremely proud after a fantastic set of results, with achievement up in many subjects.

Special congratulations to Heidi Oestreicher who achieved the highest attainment 8 score possible – grade 9 in eight subjects.

Other notable individual performances included Finn Gibson, who achieved the highest progress score reaching on average 2.7 grades above his target.

Executive Principal Ian Evason said: “We congratulate each and every one of our brilliant cohort, who with these GCSE and BTEC results will now be moving on to a broad range of post 16 courses.

“We are so proud of the tremendous amount of hard work and effort our students have put into their studies; they did everything that we asked, revised hard and as a year group supported each other.

“There have been some exceptional achievements this year and it is also important to recognise that each of our wonderful Year 11 students are individuals who have run their own races and faced their own unique challenges but they have all remained determined to do the absolute best that they could be.”

Mr Evason added: “I would also like to thank all of the teachers who have worked tirelessly to ensure students are all able to progress onto further education and study.

“I am sure the students would join me in thanking the parents of our Year 11 cohort who have been brilliantly supportive of the students and school in these most turbulent of times. Well done to each and every Year 11 student and we wish you all of the very best of luck in your future studies and careers.”

Barclay Academy students 'full of joy' on results day

Barclay Academy students were full of joy as they collected their GCSE results this morning.  

Students and staff gathered to celebrate record breaking results and individual successes at all levels.

Matthew Laban, Principal said: "These amazing young people endured the peak of Covid disruption in schools, nevertheless, showed great resilience and determination to succeed. 

"We are extremely proud of all their achievements and delighted with the results they have attained. 

"I would like to congratulate every student and thank the dedicated staff who supported students in achieving Barclay's best ever results."

Brandles School 'really pleased' with GCSE results

Brandles School pupils have celebrated 'amazing' GCSE results in Baldock this morning. 

Deputy head Ian Reid told the Comet: "We are really pleased with our results this year. 

"The average number of qualifications achieved by each student has increased from the previous two years with particular highlights being a grade 7 achieved in GCSE English language and two grade 6s in GCSE art, craft and design. 

"These are amazing achievements given the adversity and difficulties our students have faced. All our students have secured college placements or mentoring for next year. "

'Nervous tension' followed by 'tears of joy' at The Priory

Pupils at The Priory School in Hitchin took part in the 'rite of passage' of collecting their GCSE results this morning.

Headteacher Geraint Edwards said: "There was a definite nervous tension in the air as the students entered the school hall. There were tears of joy, hugging teenagers and proud parents and staff."

There was some notable successes with students achieving outstanding grades; Alice Rowlands, Mathew Reed, Rebecca Davies, George Cook and Esme and Lauren Anderson-Parrott

Mr Edwards added:  "We must not forget that these GCSE and vocational exams have been sat against a background of unprecedented disruption to learning. 

"The success achieved by these young people is a testament to their hard work, the support of their families and the dedication of their teachers. They have a lot to be proud of."

'Wonderful to see so many smiling faces' - Thomas Alleyne head

Students at the Thomas Alleyne Academy are celebrating an excellent set of results today. 

Headteacher, Mark Lewis, said: “It is wonderful to be here and see so many smiling faces. It is a testament to the character of our students that they have done so well in the first set of formal exams since before the pandemic. 

"I am delighted that so many of our students now have the results to take them to the next stage and wish them all the best.”

Sarah Knell achieved outstanding results, gaining six grade 9s in computer science, maths, English language and all three science subjects. 

Sarah thanked her teachers, “especially Mrs Bailey for her support, as my teacher in chemistry but also talking me through my next steps.” Sarah is going on to study computer science, physics and maths at A-level.

Arthur McDowell achieved four grade 9s in biology, chemistry, physics and maths, grade 8 in geography, as well as a Level 2 distinction in sports studies. 

Arthur was really pleased with the improvements he made from his mock grades and said, ”the mock exams were a really good preparation and I worked hard at home as well as attending after school study sessions to complete loads of past papers in order to improve.”

 He is continuing his studies next year at The Thomas Alleyne Academy, taking A-levels that will develop his interest in maths and science. Arthur’s mum praised his teachers, “the school support for students over lockdown was excellent, both teaching and online resources. He has had a great set of teachers”.

Lilly Young said, “I was petrified this morning but I am very happy with my results. I have enjoyed my time at Thomas Alleyne as the teachers always think of your best interests and really care. 

"After every exam they have been there to support us.” Lily achieved four grade 9 in maths and science subjects, and one grade 8 in computer science. She is looking at her A-level options but hopes to go on to study law.

George Lovelock is also celebrating today, having received four grade 9s in maths and all three sciences, a grade 8 in computer science and grade 7 in history and Spanish. He is looking forward to studying A-levels at Thomas Alleyne next year with a view to progressing on to university degree in maths or civil engineering. He said that, “there were moments of stress but I had good support. I have enjoyed being at this school and want to continue A-levels somewhere where I know the teachers and I am looking forward to September”.

Manan Malavia is ‘very proud’ of his two grade 9, and three grade 8 results which will enable him to study maths, physics and chemistry or computer science at A-level. Manan said, “it was helpful to have lots of practice prior to the GCSE exams, as my last exams had been my Year 6 SATs!” Manan is aiming to study engineering at university after his A-levels.

Rose Bigley is ‘really chuffed’ with her results, including two grade 9, two grade 8 and three grade 7. She is going out to lunch in Stevenage to celebrate with her friends but is looking forward to returning to Thomas Alleyne to study A-levels in maths, chemistry and biology. Rose has her sights set on a higher-level apprenticeship and a career with one of our local STEM employers.

Tom D’Gama is celebrating a fantastic set of results including two grade 9, three grade 8s. Tom says he is choosing to stay on to Sixth Form at Thomas Alleyne because, “the environment helps me to be more confident and I have had good teachers. 

"The recent sixth form taster sessions helped me to understand what is involved and I have chosen A-level maths, physics and computer science.”

Upward trend on results for Hitchin Girls' continues

Following the announcement of a "great set of Post-16 results" last week, Hitchin Girls' School is "delighted" with the amazing outcomes for their Year 11 students in their GCSE and Cambridge National examinations today. 

These students bore the brunt of the disruptions caused by the Covid pandemic, and rose to the challenges of different ways of working with great resilience and determination.

Frances Manning, Headteacher said: "These results are a complete validation of the hard work of both students and staff. 

"This year's outcomes demonstrate a consistent upward trend in GCSE results at HGS over the past four years and are in contrast to national trends. 

"We have worked closely with our students and parents to ensure that they had targeted support, both within individual subjects and in preparation for their revision and actual examinations.

"I could not be more delighted with these results and wish them all the best for their next steps in education.

"Special mention must go to Amber Mynott, who gained the highest score in the country in her OCR Combined Science GCSE, and to our three students who achieved Grade 9s in all subjects taken."
