Brief round-up

In equine terms SHISHKIN's win in the Maghull Novices' Chase, slightly underwhelming though it was, was still probably the best performance on the card, and the time he recorded looks good (once again) compared to the only other chase on the Mildmay course. THYME HILL, MY DROGO and HAPPYGOLUCKY all turned in smart performances, if at a slightly lower level.

But it was the human performance of Rachael Blackmore on MINELLA TIMES in making history as the first female winning rider in the world's most famous race that will, rightly, grab all the headlines. As everyone in horseracing has known for some time now, she is an exceptional talent and deserving of all the plaudits that are coming her way. Brilliant.

Bumper debrief

The two market leaders bombed out - BALCO COASTAL finding little after leading briefly 3f out and THE GOSSIPER beaten much further out than that - but plenty of credit to KNAPPERS HILL, unbeaten in 3 bumpers now and who looks an excellent prospect for jumps. Stamina won him this as he was pushed along fully 4f out under a patient ride, staying on to lead just inside the final 1f.

PEKING ROSE ran a fine race but might have made a real race of it with the winner had she knuckled down sooner, switched from mid-field to challenge 2f out but wandering markedly before going on strongly as the line loomed. She should stay further and take to jumps, too. STAGE STAR looked the likeliest winner when leading and quickening over 2f out but was soon ridden and could not get away, overhauled in the final 1f. With gaps back to 4th and 5th, he's probably run at least as well as previously.

Grand National over-round

Was 145.9% according to my data. That would be the lowest since 2005.

THE GOSSIPER achieved nothing special (119 rating on bare form) when winning at lowly Wexford (3rd and 4th well beaten since) but is a strong second favourite as the sole Irish-trained representative when the Irish had the first five home in the big race. I have laid him for a place, fwiw.

Bumper

Last 4 winners: 2019 McFabulous (140), 2018 Portrush Ted (144), 2017 Lalor (133), 2016 Bacardys (135) (average 138)

This year: 138 Balco Coastal, 132 Knappers Hill, 132 Super Six, 130 Charlie’s Glance, 130 Luttrell Lad, 130 Stage Star, 128 World of Dreams, 126 Fruit N Nut, 126 Peking Rose

BALCO COASTAL looked special when winning on all-weather at Kempton, easily fastest of 5 winners at 2 miles on the card and scoring by 17 lengths. This is a different kettle of fish but the ability is almost certainly there.

Randox Grand National

A historic win for Rachael Blackmore and MINELLA TIMES in what has been a remarkable season for the supremely gifted rider. Her mount tracked the pace and avoided major incident (that I could see), led going to 2 out and stayed on strongly. A great result!

BALKO DES FLOS outran his odds with a tremendous run, coming there with every chance 2 out and still only a couple of lengths down halfway up the run-in. ANY SECOND NOW was one of a few hard-luck stories, doing well to survive a blunder at the 10th and even better to survive being hampered at the 12th, nursed back into it but unable to do more on the run-in. BURROWS SAINT took to it really well, cruising for a long way but emptying going to the last. DISCORAMA shaped well for a long way but ran out of gas from going to 2 out.

Among the casualties were: CHRIS'S DREAM (unseated 4 out), LAKE VIEW LAD (fell 1st), MAGIC OF LIGHT (unseated 4th), ANIBALE FLY (pulled up before 14th), MISTER MALARKY (never going, pulled up before 17th), TAKINGRISKS (encountered lots of trouble, pulled up before 17th), CLOTH CAP (well there until backpedaling and pulled up before 3 out), MINELLACELEBRATION (unseated 11th), CANELO and AMI DESBOIS (fell 15th, The Chair) , THE LONG MILE (pulled up after 22nd and reportedly injured) and DOUBLE SHUFFLE (fell 12th).

That's NOT It From Me!

Thank you, Paul: loads of really interesting observations over the three days.

I will be hanging around until after the Bumper (BALCO COASTAL might just be a bit special), but don't think you are going to be getting an individual horse-by-horse debrief for all 40 runners any time soon!

Best of luck everyone.

That's It For Me

I have to shoot straight after I have landed the Grand National Trifecta(!) so wishing you the best of luck with your bets, enjoy the race and hopefully they all come back safe and well.

Thank you for dropping in throughout the three days and I hope that Simon and myself have helped to enhance your enjoyment of the meeting.

Age Stats

The last five winners were aged 8/9. The previous five winners were aged 10+. Just to give an indication of how much the changes to the race have affected the type of horse required these days.
