More violence reported around the north

Police have issued an update as a fourth night of disorder took place last night:

  • The PSNI also said that 22 officers were injured during “significant disorder and violence” in Portadown, with a woman in her 50s and a man in his 30s arrested on suspicion of riotous behaviour.
  • A house fire in the Mount Street area of Coleraine is being treated as deliberate and a racially-motivated hate crime – with a family with three young children evacuated from the property
  • In east Belfast, travel was disrupted in the Templemore Avenue area, while bricks were thrown through the windows of two houses in the Avoniel Road area in a racially motivated attack.
  • The situation in Ballymena was more subdued without the “disgraceful scenes” of rioting over the previous three nights
  • Other incidents included a protest at Carrick roundabout and a small fire in the Manse Road in Newtownabbey, with reports of anti-immigration hate graffiti being investigated in Newtownards
Protests passing off without major incident

Protests in Portadown and Ballymena were passing off without the major levels of violence seen over the previous three evenings.

Sporadic stone throwing in both towns was reported, while protestors jostled with police in Portadown. 

There have been no reports of any serious incidents at other planned protest points. 

In Belfast, around 100 people blocked the Newtownards Road but dispersed after approximately 30 minutes.

Templemore Avenue protest now over

A protest on Templemore Avenue in east Belfast has ended, according to the PSNI.

Police have deployed in large numbers in Portadown ahead of a planned anti-immigration march and protest in the town.

Protestors plan to gather at Jervis Street before marching into the town centre then making their way up Thomas Street 

Arbour Housing wrote to residents in Portadown on Wednesday stating the protest is “directed towards migrants, foreign nationals and others".

Traffic diverted as protest closes part of east Belfast road

Approximately 100 protestors have gathered at the junction of the Newtownards Road and Templemore Avenue in east Belfast. 

The road is closed at the junction, with police diverting traffic. 

15 people arrested and four charged in total: police

The PSNI said that further arrests have been made in relation to disorder in Ballymena on Wednesday night.

A 30-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman have been arrested and remain in custody.

A total of 15 have been arrested and four charged over ongoing disorder.
