Justin Rose's tribute to Rory McIlroy shows why he is the classiest man in golf

If there was one downer about Rory McIlroy's Master's win, it was that Justin Rose had to be on the losing side of the play-off.

The Englishman has one major to his name, the 2013 US Open, but has been desperately close before, also losing a Masters play-off to Sergio Garcia in 2017.

He is one of the most respected players in the game, and his tribute to McIlroy on X shows why he may be the classiest man in the sport as well.

He said: "I gave it everything….  Congratulations  @McIlroyRory on winning the @TheMastersand completing the Grand Slam.. very cool sharing the green with you in that moment… Thank you Team as always for all the support during the week… We go again".

The live odds that highlight just how mental Rory McIlroy's final round at the Masters was

Rory McIlroy's final round at Augusta last night was one of the most intense and up-and-down final days we have ever seen from a player.

His two-shot lead was gone with a first-hole double bogey, before some stunning putting lead to a four-shot lead after ten holes.

Then a disastrous double on 13 and bogey on 14 brought Justin Rose back into contention.

But two stunning approach shots on 15 and 17 lead to two birdies and it looked for all the world that McIlroy would win it with a par on 18, before a miscued approach landed in the bunker and he was unable to get up and down.

Thankfully, he got rid of his demons with a birdie on the first play-off hole.

His live odds after every hole show just how mental the round truly was.

Shane Lowry explains why McIlroy Masters win was extra important for players

Shane Lowry was as happy as anyone after Rory McIlroy's Masters win last night.

Like all of us, he had watched his good friend falter on multiple occasions during the final round of a major over the 11 years since his last one before yesterday.

Speaking after the round, Lowry said that other golfers can take inspiration from this and McIlroy's ability to get back up after multiple knocks.

He said: "This means everything to him, it's all he thinks about, all he talks about.

"Always said to me he'd retire a happy man if he won the green jacket.

"He's had a long ten years, he's had a lot of hurdles, he's had a lot of moments to get back up from.

"It's a sign for the rest of us to cling on to that no matter what happens, no matter how bad you feel, you just need to keep going, keep working hard and your day will come."

Insane 'banana' shot from McIlroy saves Masters dream

Just when it looked like the Masters was slipping away from him, with Justin Rose taking a one-stroke lead, Rory McIlroy took the lead back on the par 5 15th.

And it was all thanks to an insane, 209 yard approach shot, that was hooked nearly 40 yards right around a tree.

It landed six feet from the hole and McIlroy was able to two putt for birdie.

McIlroy blows lead after bizarre pitch shot goes into the water

Rory McIlroy looked like he was cruising with a three-shot lead playing his third shot on the par five 13th hole.

Instead of going for the green in two, he made the sensible choice to lay up.

However, he miss hit his straight-forward pitch, instead landing in Raes Creek.

He made double bogey, while Justin Rose birdied the 16th, putting him level with McIlroy on -11.

Rory McIlroy hits barely believable, through-the-trees approach shot

Rory McIlroy hit one of, if not the best approach shot we have seen all week at the Masters.

After missing the fairway with his drive, McIlroy played a high-risk shot through trees, but nearly holed it from 152 yards out.

The ball ended up eight feet from the pin, but unfortunately he was not able to hole the birdie putt.

McIlroy opens up three-shot lead after sumptuous putting display

After his disastrous, double-bogey start, McIlroy has now opened up a three-shot lead over Bryson DeChambeau.

This was thanks to back-to-back birdies on holes three and four, while DeChambeau bogeyed both.

McIlroy suffers horror start on first hole of his final round at the Masters

Rory McIlroy got off to the worst start possible at the first hole of final round at the Masters.

After finding sand off the tee, the Northern Irishman was not able to reach the green, and after a mediocre approach he proceeded to three putt.

Bryson DeChambeau scrambled well and made par, clawing back the two-shot deficit he started with.

Shane Lowry loses patience with media after awful third-round finish

Shane Lowry was looking in good stead to mount a real challenge on the final day of the Masters.

However, bogeys on 17 and 18 to finish yesterday's round have likely scuppered his chances.

His level par round has him on five under par, and seven shots off leader Rory McIlroy.

When speaking to the media after the disappointing finish, Lowry cut a frustrated figure.

He was asked: "Did you find yourself looking back at all at Rory?"

Lowry replied: "No. No, I'm not going to stand here and talk about Rory for 10 minutes. I'm trying to win the tournament, as well. I know that's what y'all want me to talk about, but I've just had a shit finish.

"I've got a chance to win the Masters tomorrow, and I'm going to go hit some balls.

"I'm going to go and... we talk about Collin Morikawa a few weeks ago. I think we need time. I think I need a half an hour now to sit there and gather my thoughts. I can't be coming to talk to you guys straight away. It shouldn't be happening. I don't agree with it.

"Tennis players have to talk to the media, but they have a half an hour or hour before they have to do it. I feel like we should have the same thing. That's how I feel. I'm probably going to say something stupid. I probably already have said something stupid because I'm pissed off right now. I'm just going to leave, okay?"
