Highest levels of sulfur dioxide recorded

State volcanologists record the highest levels of volcanic sulfur dioxide from Taal Volcano.

As of Sunday afternoon, Phivolcs log at an average of 22,628 tonnes/day and a total of 26 strong and very shallow low-frequency volcanic earthquakes.

"In view of the above, DOST-PHIVOLCS is reminding the public that Alert Level 3 prevails over Taal Volcano and that current SO2 parameters indicate ongoing magmatic extrusion at the Main Crater that may further drive succeeding explosions," Phivolcs says in an advisory.

Alert Level 3 still up

Alert Level 3 is still raised over Taal Volcano as Phivolcs records 31 volcanic earthquakes and weak background tremor in the past 24 hours.

Entering Taal Volcano Island and high-risk barangays Agoncillo and Laurel, as well as sailing through Taal Lake, is still prohibited.

Phivolcs warns that pyroclastic density currents or base surge, volcanic tsunami and ashfall are possible.

More than 2,000 flee as Taal Volcano spews toxic gas

More than 2,000 people have fled from a volcano eruption that has filled the air near the Philippine capital with toxic gas, officials said Saturday.

Taal Volcano, which sits in a picturesque lake, has been belching sulphur dioxide for several days, creating a thick haze over Manila and several surrounding provinces, and prompting health warnings.

Alert Level 3 still up in Taal Volcano; 48 quakes recorded in 24 hours

Taal Volcano remains in Alert Level 3 as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and  Seismology recorded 48 volcanic quakes in the last 24 hours.

In its 8 a.m. bulletin Saturday, Phivolcs said two volcano-tectonic earthquakes, 40 low frequency volcanic earthquakes, six volcanic tremor events with durations of up to four minutes, and low-level background tremor which began on April 8 were recorded.

What to put in your 'go bag' or emergency bucket

The Department of Health said residents of communities near Taal should prepare a "go bag" or "emergency balde (bucket)" with the following:

  • Clean clothes and hygiene kits which include toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, sanitary napkin
  • Drinking water or purification tablets
  • Canned goods, biscuits
  • Medicine and first aid kit
  • Face mask and face shield
  • Insect repellent and mosquito net

Joint Task Force Taal activated for relief ops

The government has activated Joint Task Force Taal to help with evacuation and potential relief operations, the Palace says Friday, June 2.

Police and Coast Guard units have also been put on alert for humanitarian and disaster relief operations.

"The Department of Social Welfare and Development Region 4-A is on heightened alert and has stockpiles of relief support consisting of food packs amounting to P1.4 million and non-food items worth P11 million," presidential spokesperson Harry Roque also says.

"We ask residents in the areas surrounding the volcano lake to remain vigilant, take precautionary measures, cooperate with their local authorities should the need for evacuation arise," he also says.

Alert Level 3 remains

Alert Level 3 remains over Taal Volcano, where 28 volcanic earthquakes and one "explosion-type" quake have been recorded.

Evacuation in Laurel, Batangas

Evacuation of some barangays of Laurel, Batangas continued into Thursday night, the Philippine Red Cross, which provided trucks and volunteers, said on its social media accounts.
