‘Ofel’ further weakens as it drifts near Taiwan

Tropical Storm Ofel (international name: Usagi) has further weakened while slowly moving north-northeastward over the sea west of Taiwan, state weather agency PAGASA said early Saturday, November 16.

As of 4 a.m., Ofel was spotted 240 kilometers northwest of Itbayat, Batanes.

'Pepito' approaches typhoon level as 'Ofel' loses strength

PAGASA said Severe Tropical Storm Pepito (Man-Yi) has intensified significantly and is approaching typhoon strength, while Typhoon Ofel (Usagi) has begun to weaken as it moves over Luzon Strait early Friday, November 15.

Ofel's center was located 100 kilometers northwest of Calayan, Cagayan, with maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts reaching 150 kph. Moving north-northwestward at 20 kph, Ofel has a central pressure of 975 hPa.

Typhoon Ofel (international name: Usagi) slammed into the Philippines' already disaster-ravaged north on Thursday, as authorities rushed to evacuate thousands of people from coastal areas.

Ofel made landfall in the town of Baggao in Cagayan province at 0530 GMT with winds of 175 kilometers (109 miles) an hour, PAGASA said -- the fifth storm to strike the country in just three weeks.

The Philippines raised its highest storm alert and evacuated thousands of people on Thursday, as Super Typhoon Ofel (international name: Usagi) barrelled towards its already disaster-ravaged north.

Packing sustained winds of up to 180 kilometers (112 miles) an hour, Ofel is set to smash onto the main island of Luzon in the afternoon local time -- the fifth storm to threaten the country in just three weeks.

 Super Typhoon "Ofel" (International name: Usagi) is set to make landfall over the eastern coast of Cagayan on Thursday afternoon, November 14, the state weather bureau said. 

PAGASA has raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 5 in several Cagayan areas.
