UFC Saudi Arabia: Final Thoughts

Was it an early finish? Maybe.

Israel Adesanya got off to a good start, but he got badly hurt with each of the clean shots Nassourdine Imavov landed on him. I don't think the stoppage was egregious enough to halt Imavov's rise up the rankings, or his chances of getting in the title picture soon after Du Plessis vs. Strickland 2. HIGHLIGHTS

In the co-main event Shara Magomedov shot nothing but blanks, taking a back seat in the fight to Michael Page. There wasn't much action in this one, despite what we thought might happen when these two would meet. However, Page pushed the pace and showed a lot more aggression than the previous undefeated Magomedov. HIGHLIGHTS

We had an even worse fight before that one. Sergei Pavlovich beat Jairzinho Rozenstruik in a very boring affair. Pavlovich got some take downs and laid on Rozenstruik for large portions of the second and fourth rounds.

Vinicius Oliveira got a win over Said Nurmagomedov after a gruelling tactical battle. Nurmagomedov was flowing early with his flashy kicks, but Oliviera used his wrestling to grind out a win.

Fares Ziam beat Mike Davis to open the main card. This was the best fight of the night, by miles. Ziam's striking continues to look very dangerous, as he bloodied Davis and avoided some tricky and unorthodox grappling situations.

We had a couple of finishes on the undercard.

Shamil Gaziev flattened Thomas Petersen with a walk-off KO. HIGHLIGHTS

Terrance McKinney sliced through Damir Hadzovic and finished him with ground and pound. HIGHLIGHTS

And Bogdan Grad beat up a gassed Lucas Alexander. HIGHLIGHTS

Jasmine Jasudavicius picked up a big win over Mayra Bueno Silva in the undercard. Jasudavicius hurt her with an elbow on the ground and MBS's faded quickly (physically and mentally) after that.

In the first fight of the night the judges robbed Jamal Pogues, handing a decision to Hamdy Abdulwahab.

Official decision: Nassourdine Imavov def. Israel Adesanya via TKO (right hook and ground strikes), round 2 (0:30)

Israel Adesanya won the first round, but was hurt by an Imavov uppercut. In the second Imavov put him down with a big overhand right. The TKO came a little quick for my liking. I would have liked to see the former champ given more time to work out of that. That's two questionable TKO wins on Imavov's current winning streak.

Adesanya congratulates Imavov.

He's gracious in defeat despite how disappointed he must be in that decision.

Adesanya lands a calf kick and a jab in the opening ten seconds.

There's a brief pause for an eye poke to Adesanya. Imavov then lands a huge right hand over the top that drops Adesanya! Adesanya jumps on him with ground and pound and Marc Goddard calls it off. Adesanya, who looks pretty clear eyed, immediately protests the finish.

10-9 Adesanya.

Even though Imavov landed the best shot of the fight, Adesanya gets the round for all his activity. A solid, albeit not spectacular round, for the former champ.

Imavov lands a big uppercut!

It sends Adesanya back to the fence. Adesanya swing back, in survival mode, and it's enough to prevent Imavov following up. Imavov comes back with a takedown attempt. Adesanya stuffs it, though. They clinch against the fence. Adesanya defends against the level change and then escapes to the side.

Imavov comes forwards with a one-two.

Adesanya slips them, though, and avoids getting trapped against the fence. They Thai clinch in the middle, Adesanya lands a knee to the thigh and they break.

Adesanya misses on a punch.

Imavov gets the body lock, but Adesanya breaks it and moves away quickly.

Imavov comes forwards with a combo, but slips...

He tries to turn it into a takedown. Adesanya defends it well and shows good strength to toss Imavov off of him.

Adesanya lands an inside thigh kick.

He looks very springy thus far. Imavov is more stationary, with his hands high.
