Recap: SNP leadership hopefuls trade blows in bruising debate
Regan-Harvie spat intensifies

Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie said on Twitter earlier that Regan's claim that she spoke to all the pro-independence parties earlier today was "simply, plainly false".

Regan's team has now responded to that statement, saying the Greens were called and a message was left...but they are still awaiting a callback.

Scottish Conservative reaction

Scottish Conservative party chairman Craig Hoy said: “All three candidates are speaking to those who share their obsession with independence, and ignoring the priorities of the vast majority of Scots, who want them to concentrate on the real issues.

“Ash Regan admitted that the SNP has lost its way – but she blames Westminster, rather than the failings of the government of which she was a part. As usual, it’s Westminster’s fault.

“Humza Yousaf promised to build on a ‘progressive agenda’, but said it was only going to be possible with his extreme and divisive version of independence.

“Kate Forbes says it’s time for change and continuity won’t cut it. You’d never know she’s been one of the two or three most senior members of this administration, that she’s now disowning, while rubbishing her cabinet colleagues.

“The reality is this is a party in the midst of a civil war – riven from top to bottom with bitter splits, which were barely contained when the candidates began cross-examining each other.”

Scottish Labour reaction to SNP leadership debate

Scottish Labour deputy leader Jackie Baillie told STV News' Westminster correspondent Kathryn Samson that the debate was "comedy gold, if it wasn't so serious".

Baillie said: "What we've seen is three candidates for the SNP leadership destroying their own party's record in office and actually attempting to destroy each other - it has been unedifying if you are a member of the SNP.

"Certainly, for the rest of us in the opposition we are just astonished at how bitter and vitriolic and divisive this debate has been."

Woud the candidates keep the monarchy in an independent Scotland?

Forbes said there were “bigger issues facing Scotland”.

She added: “I am pretty relaxed, I would see us as part of the Commonwealth.”

But both Yousaf and Regan declared themselves to be republicans.

Yousaf said he would “keep the monarchy for a period of time” but added “I would hope an independent Scotland would be a republic in the future”.

Regan said her preference would be to have an elected head of state for an independent Scotland.

And she said in the “new circumstances” after the death of the Queen last year it might be time for the SNP conference to debate if retaining the monarchy was still the right policy for the party “or whether we should move to a policy of having an elected head of state”.

WATCH: Instant analysis after debate ends

STV's special correspondent Bernard Ponsonby provides instant analysis following the debate.

What roles for the other candidates in the winner's administration?

Viewer question: "In the event that you are successful in the leadership election, what role do you envisage for the other two candidates in your administration?"

Yousaf: They're both very capable. Both my colleagues, on my left and my right, are talented - they're capable and they've got a lot to give to Scottish public life.

Regan: I will put the absolute best people in the right roles and then I will give them the freedom to run their department as they see fit.

Forbes: I would hope there would be roles for both of them. There is room for Humza Yousaf, maybe not in health, but there is room for Humza Yousaf, absolutely."
