Scottish Labour triumph over SNP to win Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election

Scottish Labour has won the Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election.

Michael Shanks will become Scotland's newest MP after he beat the SNP's Katy Loudon and the 12 other candidates who put their names on the ballot.

'Labour are back as an electoral force'

STV's Special Correspondent Bernard Ponsonby says a good result for Labour could show the party is back as a political force in Scotland.

It comes after Anas Sarwar said he was confident his party has had a strong result in the by-election.

Anas Sarwar arrives with Scottish Labour candidate

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has arrived in Hamilton with his party's candidate Michael Shanks.

He joins the Greens' Patrick Harvie as the only two main party leaders at the count.

Sarwar and Shanks were greeted with applause by Labour activists.

Sarwar called the election a "seismic" moment and said he's confident his party has had a strong showing at the election.

Tories vote may be 'squeezed'

The Scottish Conservatives are bracing themselves for a potential decline in their vote.

The party's candidate, Thomas Kerr, told STV News: "I'm proud of the campaign we ran. We focused on people's priorities and offered a real alternative for people.

"That sounds like a slogan but it's not. When you look at the two main parties, the SNP and Labour, on 99% of issues they agree with each other."

The Glasgow City Council Tory group leader said his party may be "squeezed" at the election due to tactical voting.

"This is a very unique set of circumstances.

"A lot of our people may have tactically voted and we may be squeezed a bit because people want the SNP out."

SNP candidate arrives at count

SNP candidate Katy Loudon has arrived at the South Lanarkshire Council headquarters.

The councillor is hoping to stave off a Labour victory in Rutherglen and Hamilton West.

The result of the by-election is expected sometime in the next hour.

Voter turnout announced

Officials have announced the voter turnout was 37.19%, with 30,531 people casting a ballot.

Some 82,104 were eligible to vote.
