Trainer Ken McPeek advised the match that produced Mystik Dan, adding another layer of interest to his pedigree.
Mystik Dan’s sire, Goldencents, and maternal grandsire, Colonel John, both won the Santa Anita Derby (G1) before finishing unplaced, in their respective years, in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
Progressing on the 2024 trail at Oaklawn Park, Mystik Dan aims to improve on their efforts at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May. His female line, shared with fellow hopeful No More Time, is responsible for five Derby winners spanning more than a century.
The finale will be contested at one-mile and I’m expecting a breakthrough for #3 Gun Party (7-2). Asmussen trainee is the first foal out of a classy mare and hails from a fantastic family. The Curlin colt, who brought $1.7 million as a yearling, was second to Just A Touch on debut followed by a runner-up result to the promising Cornishman second time out. He could sit a fine voyage tracking the tempo while in range throughout since the field lacks a lot of early gas. And I love that Rosario will ride.
Bettors saw Race 13 as a two-horse battle between Discreet Mischief and Jefferson Street, but in the end it was Raging Torrent who obliterated his rivals as the 8-1 third choice.
Setting fractions of :22.37, :44.93, and 1:08.77 did nothing to tire Raging Torrent. When asked for his best run in the homestretch, the son of Maximus Mischief opened up with authority, winning by approximately eight lengths in the blazing time of 1:21.13. For comparison, older males required 1:21.95 to complete the Churchill Downs (G1) earlier in the afternoon.
Discreet Mischief narrowly edged Jefferson Street for second place.
Raging Torrent had competed on turf in his first two starts of 2024, but last year he placed third in the Best Pal (G3) on dirt. Returning to dirt at Churchill Downs clearly made a difference for the Doug O'Neill trainee, who looks ready to tackle the graded ranks again after his performance today.
Racing at Churchill Downs continues with a pair of post-Derby contests. The first is Race 13, a $100,000 allowance optional claimer for three-year-old sprinting seven furlongs on dirt.
Two of the entrants look like future stakes horses. #2 Discreet Mischief impressed when dominating a seven-furlong maiden special weight at Keeneland last month by 8 1/4 lengths for trainer Brad Cox.
#7 Jefferson Street also impressed at Keeneland last month, smashing a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight by nine lengths for Hall of Fame conditioner Bill Mott.
An exciting showdown could be in the offing—maybe not quite as exciting as the three-horse finish in the Kentucky Derby, but it's hard to top a finish like that.
